Born: 3 June 1926 at North Sydney, Nova Scotia.

Education: North Sydney High School; Empire Business College; First woman graduate of the year-long course in Canadian and International Studies at the National Defence College, Kingston (1972).

Business: Various secretarial positions in Canada and the United Kingdom (1943-56); Executive Director, Progressive Conservative National Headquarters (195746); Administrative Officer and Tutor, Department of Political Studies, Queen's University (1966-72).

Politics: National Secretary, Progressive Conservative Association of Canada (1966-69); First elected to the House of Commons at General Election, 30 October 1972; Re-elected 8 July 1974; Re-elected 22 May 1979; Re-elected 18 February 1980; Appointed Progressive Conservative critic for Indian Affairs and Northern Development, December 1972; Appointed Progressive Conservative critic for Federal-Provincial Relations, April 1976; Sworn of the Privy Council and appointed Secretary of State for External Affairs, June 1979; Appointed Progressive Conservative critic for External Affairs, April 1980; Appointed Progressive Conservative Chairman of the Social Development Caucus Committee and Spokesman on the Status of Women, September 1981.

Associations: Past President, Elizabeth Fry Society of Kingston (1968-70); Director, Canadian Political Science Association  (1972-75); Member, Canadian Institute of International Affairs; Member, Canadian Civil Liberties Association; Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from Mount Saint Vincent University, Halifax, May 1979; Honorary Doctorate of Laws from University of Maine, Orono, May1980; Honorary Doctorate of Laws from McMaster University, Hamilton, May 1980; Honorary Doctorate of Laws from Queen's University, Kingston, May1981.
